Leftover PrescriptionOpioids AfterMinor Procedures: AnUnwitting Source for Accidental Overdose in Children Increasing rates of opioid misuse, adverse events, and deaths from opioids have paralleled prescription patterns,1 suggesting that physician efforts to alleviate pain have contributed to this public health crisis. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to prescription opioid overdose and misuse, given high rates of exposure in this group.2-4 Unintentional opioid deaths are estimated at 0.1 and 3.7 per 100 000 children and adolescents/young adults, respectively,1 and nearly all unintentional childhood exposures to opioids are to other family members’ medications.4 Half of adolescents who misuse prescription opioids acquire them from their own previous prescriptions, friends, or family members and 8% share their prescriptions with others.3,5 Given increasing public health concerns, the American College of Physicians recommends that an evidence-based defined maximum opioid dosage and duration of treatment be developed and followed,6 which, in part, could reduce the amounts of unused drugs available for adverse events and misuse. Therefore, we compared the opioid doses dispensed to children with the amount used following minor outpatient procedures to estimate the unused drugs remaining in children’s homes and inform future opioid prescribing.

Type and Frequency of Opioid Pain Medications Returned for Disposal

Prescription opioids have increasingly been involved in overdose deaths and treatment admissions. Disposal programs may play an important role in curbing this trend. The objectives of this study were to: (1) quantify the prescription opioids returned for disposal to a local take-back program, and (2) explore selected drug characteristics that may predict the quantity of unused opioids. Leftover...

Opioid Use and Storage Patterns by Patients after Hospital Discharge following Surgery

INTRODUCTION Opioid-based analgesic therapy represents a cornerstone of pain management after surgery. The recent rise in opioid sales and opioid overdoses suggests it is important to maximize the safety of opioid prescribing after surgery. Given that patients may live with other family members in the home, safe storage and appropriate disposal of excess opioids after hospital discharge are nec...

Long-term opioid therapy for chronic pain and the risk of opioid addiction.

INTRODUCTION There has been a constant struggle to define the role of opioids in medical therapy, due to their potential for misuse, overuse, and addiction since pain is a completely subjective sensation, not amenable to objective measurement, and is intimately tied to emotion and the patient’s psychological well-being. Thus the medical decision to administer an opioid analgesic is an attempt t...

Prescription Opioid Duration of Action and the Risk of Unintentional Overdose.

IMPORTANCE The unprecedented increase in unintentional overdose events that has occurred in tandem with escalating sales of prescription opioids over the past 2 decades has raised concerns about whether the therapeutic use of opioids has contributed to increases in overdose injury. Few controlled studies have examined the extent to which ecologic measures of increases in opioid prescribing and ...
